5 Tips for Managing a Telecommuting Workforce

Published:

Social distancing measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus require many companies to transition to telework. Though some organizations have the infrastructure and processes already in place, some teams may be dealing with this transition for the first time. Here's how you can successfully lead a team that's new to working from home.

1. Provide resources

Make sure your employees have the technology and equipment necessary to do their jobs remotely, which can include laptops, monitors, headsets and more. Set clear guidelines for how this equipment should be used, how they can get it, and what support will be available if they run into technical difficulties.

2. Set meeting guidelines

Decide which videoconferencing tool — like Slack, Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams or more — you'll use for meetings. Then, determine meeting etiquette. Should team members have their videos enabled during videoconference calls? Are some meetings optional? Set your expectations and communicate them clearly.

3. Prioritize communication

With everyone working from different locations, effective communication is essential. Determine the primary method of communication: email, texting, phone calls or another messaging system. Make sure all employees are aware of and comfortable with the method of communication you use.

4. Embrace flexibility

Determine what hours you expect employees to be online each day, and let them know if it's acceptable to adjust their work schedules. Your team will need to be flexible and adaptable as employees transition to working entirely from home and determine their daily routines.

5. Encourage transparency

Employees should communicate their availability throughout the day, letting team members know if they're away from their computer or on a call. Encourage employees to be honest about any roadblocks they face, and keep your virtual "door" open to hear and address these concerns.

Most importantly, be supportive and encouraging during this stressful time. Encourage your employees to maintain a work/life balance take care of themselves mentally and physically, making time to stay active and unwind.
